2025 ALAN Award

Press Release: Authors Against Book Bans wins the 2025 ALAN Award

The current climate has seen a rise in book bans across the country, often targeting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ stories. Authors Against Book Bans is a “coalition of writers, illustrators, anthology editors and contributors, and other book creators who stand united against the deeply unconstitutional movement to limit” literary choice. For this reason, the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN) is pleased to announce Authors Against Book Bans as the recipient of the 2025 ALAN Award, an award which honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the field of adolescent literature.

Authors Against Book Bans describe their concern as “not only for the books themselves, but for the children, families, educators, librarians, and communities who suffer when the freedom to read is challenged and taken away and to fight against any attempt to erase and/or silence voices that speak truthfully about essential human experiences. They believe in the power of literature to create empathy, foster self-empowerment, impart knowledge, and enhance diversity of thought” and we are thrilled to honor the work they do.

Join us at the ALAN Breakfast, Saturday, November 22, during the 2025 NCTE Conference in Denver, CO, as we present the ALAN Award to Authors Against Book Bans and celebrate them and their remarkable commitment to ensure all readers access to stories and histories from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The members of the 2025 ALAN Award Committee are Chair Morgan Jackson, Past Chair Dr. Rob Bittner, Alyssa Chrisman, Tracey Flores, and Ryan Schey.
